David J. Anschel, M.D.

Dr. Anschel completed a B.S. in Biological Sciences summa cum laude, from the State University of New York in Buffalo. He then went on to earn a M.D. with honors in Physiology and Neuroscience, from the New York University program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston Children’s Hospital; followed by a 2-year fellowship in Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology at Stanford University in Pala Alto, CA. After fellowship at Stanford University, Dr. Anschel was co-director of the epilepsy program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he also served as Assistant Professor of Neurology and Associate Scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Currently he is the founding Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of Long Island and the Director of Clinical Neurophysiology at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY. This is the only NAEC Level 4 certified center in Suffolk County. Dr. Anschel has over 70 scientific and technical publications; and holds board certifications in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and Epilepsy.

Dr. Bruno is board certified in Neurology and Sleep Disorders.  He completed his Neurology training at George Washington University in Washington, DC in 2003.  He then went on to complete a fellowship in both Neurophysiology (Epilepsy/Neuromuscular Disorders) and Sleep Disorders at SUNY Stony Brook in 2004 and 2005 respectively.  He is currently in solo practice and is Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at SUNY Stony Brook.  Dr. Bruno is also Associate Clinical Director of The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of Long Island and offers clinical evaluations at the Sleep Disorders Center, both located at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY. Highly regarded by his patients, Dr. Bruno was rated at the highest level of satisfaction in a recent independent survey. He has won several merits of distinction, including several Patient’s Choice Awards, Americas Top Doctor Award and Most Compassionate Doctor Recognition.  He was also the recipient of the Extraordinary People in Care Award by the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island.

 

Dr. Bruno specializes in Sleep Apnea and Epilepsy, as well as general neurology.  In his practice, he only uses the most up to date technologies to diagnose and treat these conditions; Polysomnography and Electroencephalography respectively. Board certified in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology, Sean T. Hwang, MD specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of seizures, the interpretation of video electroencephalography, performs electrical cortical stimulation mapping and operative planning for epilepsy surgery. He is Associate Program Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program at Northwell Health and Assistant Professor of Neurology at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Dr. Hwang is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society and American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. Dr. Hwang is widely known as an expert in his field and was the 2017 recipient of EPIC Long Island’s Professional Leadership Award for his commitment and dedication to his colleagues and patients.

Fred A. Lado, MD PhD

Fred A. Lado, MD PhD serves as Director, Epilepsy Program, Northwell Central and Eastern Regions for Northwell Health.

Dr. Lado received his MD and PhD degrees from NYU School of Medicine.  His thesis research was on the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine human electrical brain activity.  He completed his neurology residency at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center. He did his fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology at Montefiore Medical Center, where he remained on faculty for 18 years prior to joining Northwell. Dr. Lado serves on numerous boards and committees of the American Epilepsy Society, the International League Against Epilepsy, and the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. This past February, Dr. Lado joined Northwell as the Director of the Epilepsy Program in the central and eastern regions of the Northwell network.  His specialty is Epilepsy.

Having joined Northwell Health in 2006, Ashesh D. Mehta, MD, PhD is Director of Epilepsy Surgery at North Shore University Hospital and Director of the Laboratory of Human Brain Mapping at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Dr. Mehta has authored numerous articles for medical journals and book chapters in neurosurgery, neurophysiology and epilepsy and has been featured on national television as an expert in a variety of neuroscience topics. He has presented his research and clinical findings at international meetings and has received National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for research towards the development of innovative therapies for the treatment of neurological disease.

Joining Northwell Health in 2010, Sarah Schaffer, PhD, ABPP-cn is a clinical neuropsychologist and Assistant Professor of Neurology at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Dr. Schaffer completed her clinical psychology degree at Pacific Graduate School of Psychology and a post-doctoral fellowship at the New York University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. She has clinical focus in epilepsy, dementia, neurosurgery (including wada procedure and both intra- and extra-operative cortical mapping), traumatic brain injury and stroke. Dr. Schaffer is a member of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, New York State Psychological Association, American Psychological Association APA Division 40, International Neuropsychological Society, National Academy of Neuropsychology and the New York Neuropsychology Group.

Rebecca Spiegel, M.D.

Rebecca Spiegel, MD – Dr. Spiegel is a Board Certified Adult Neurologist at Stony Brook Medicine. She serves as Chief of EEG/Epilepsy and Director of Sleep Neurology at Stony Brook Medicine. She lead the efforts to establish a state of the art epilepsy surgical program at Stony Brook Medicine and helped create an epilepsy clinical trials division. She is also involved in several investigator initiated trials. She is the recipient of patients’ awards for most compassionate doctor and several teaching awards. Most recently, Dr. Spiegel received a Clinician Excellence Award from her department. She is a member of several professional societies including the American Epilepsy Society and the American Academy of Neurology. She has both a Master’s Degree in Psychology and an MD from the University of Chicago. She completed her Neurology residency and Neurophysiology Fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is an Associate Professor at Stony Brook Medicine. She is devoted to Epilepsy Awareness and is active with the annual Walk for Epilepsy and a member of the Professional Advisory Board of EPIC Long Island.

Scott J. Stevens, M.D.

After graduating at the top of his class at State University of New York Upstate Medical University, Scott J. Stevens, MD completed his residency at Brown Medical School where he served as chief resident and was awarded the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award. He completed his clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy fellowship at Northwell Health and stayed as an attending physician, being appointed Director of Advanced Clinical Experience in Neurology at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. He is currently in charge of student education in clinical neurology.
